“These Things” by Anne McCue

(Words/Music: Anne McCue, Album: Amazing Ordinary Things, Relentless Records 2000)

I first discovered Anne McCue while I was experimenting with internet radio one summer and ended up hooked on a station from Australia. What I heard were remarkable melodies, creative and intriguing lyrics, and intense song development. I immediately began searching for her music online and in stores (it wasn’t readily available anywhere, yet) but all I managed to find at the time was this song. With its hauntingly beautiful melodies and lyrics of loss and desperation, it defines my relationship with Anne McCue: I have taken one song and longed for so much more. Last week, as I was re-loading iTunes on my new computer, I realizes that it had been awhile since I heard this song (it helps that she’s listed toward the top, alphabetically) and pressed PLAY to find the song exactly as I remembered. After a quick search, I found that she has moved herself and her career to the US and garnered praise from such female artists as Lucinda Williams and Sarah McLachlan (understandably, both). I suppose my next step is to find some more music from Anne McCue and thank my Tumblr blog for helping me re-discover a song and artist I had forgotten.
