“Shaking the Tree” by Peter Gabriel
(Words/Music: Youssou N’Dour, Album: Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, Geffen 1990)

Gabriel takes this wonderfully simple song written and originally performed by Senegalese singer and percussionist Youssou N’Dour and creates a song which builds by adding layer upon layer, much in the way Bach or Ravel do in classical music. The result is a song with much different textures at the end that existed at the beginning. Do yourself a favor and listen to the whole thing and then go back and listen to the beginning again. You’ll see.
