“Hey Joe/Sunshine of Your Love” by Jimi Hendrix

Hear Jimi play “Hey Joe” live and stop mid way through and begin playing Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love”. Elvis Costello, eat your heart out.

themesong: all that I’m living for

One of the  things that other teachers seem to marvel at is my patience with the high schoolers we teach. They seem to think it’s pretty amazing at times, but I really believe that if you are nice to people, they’ll be nice to you. It also helps to remember that they’re only 14-18 years old and aren’t perfect (then again, neither are adults) and they’re experiencing a lot of things for the first time, so it doesn’t make sense to crucify them for a mistake. Usually, if a student makes a “mistake” in my class (says something the wrong way or is about to get into a confrontation with either me or another student), I try to make sure they know the consequences if they carry their actions any further. Most of the time, it works and we have a pretty peaceful day. And the kids actually appreciate it, too.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Alison (Live - 1977)

I’m enamored of early Elvis’ voice. This live track is what I’m talkin’ bout.

I’m not gonna get too sentimental

Elvis Costello interrupts the Beastie Boys on 25th Anniversary of SNL to play “Radio, Radio” reminiscent of years earlier when he stopped his own band in the middle of “Less Than Zero” to play “Radio, Radio.” He must REALLY like that song.

“Less Than Zero” by Elvis Costello
(Words/Music: Elvis Costello, Album: My Aim Is True, Stiff Records 1977)

By mid-1977, the record companies had begun courting bands similar to the original punks like Sex Pistols and the Damned, but which were more marketable. The new wave of punk took the stripped down band, raw energy, and purposeful lyrics and infused it with better songwriting, better musicianship, and less controversial band members.

One of those artists was Elvis Costello. His debut album, My Aim Is True, came out during the summer of 1977 and gained popularity and notoriety with its catchy pop songs, some of which, like Less Than Zero, contain anti-Fascist themes which coincide with the feelings and attitudes of much of England at the time. The difference was in the packaging: Elvis Costello was a non-threatening version of punk that initially accomplished what Malcolm McLaren wanted from the Sex Pistols: to recapture the rebellious energy of 50 rock ‘n’ roll.

“Less Than Zero” is also the song that Elvis Costello began playing Saturday Night Live when he suddenly stopped and launched into the song he wanted to play, “Radio Radio.”
