At the 1:19 mark, Jaco Pastorius takes a short solo that causes bass players all over the world to weep in the knowledge that they will never be as good.
Also interesting for the political insight that you need both the left wing and the right wing to fly.

Remembering Jaco!

“Teen Town” by Weather Report
Just got an alert on my phone about possible tornado activity in CT. Brings me back to last year when they closed school for a week at the beginning of the year because a hurricane knocked power out of most of the state (I was out for a week).
So I guess the combination of school and bad weather made me think of this song. And besides, any time is a great time to hear some Jazz Fusion and the bass master, Jaco Pastorius.
Now if only I could find my ruby slippers…

“3 Views of a Secret” by Jaco Patorius
(Music: Jaco Pastorius, Album: Word of Mouth, Warner Bros. 1981)
So much attention is paid to the fluency of Jaco’s bass playing, that his immense skill as a songwriter often goes overlooked. “3 Views of a Secret” is a wonderfully accessible example of how Jaco can write a simple and catchy melody, provide some interesting colors in the background (like the chorus), and still leave room to showcase musicians like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, who made guest appearances on the album.
