“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by Jeff Healey
(Words/Music: George Harrison, Album: Hell To Pay, Arista 1990)
My favorite cover of my favorite Beatles song.

“Gimme Sympathy” by Metric
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. Granted, the first thing that attracted me was the question “who would you rather be, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?” but it goes without saying that the beat, the groove, the melody - everything - is just so damn catchy.
And the video is a a great variation on the standard “band-plays-song” format.
And as for that question? I take a different approach to it than most. I think it’s not quite as straight-forward as most would think. Instead, I think it’s asking about the age-old dilemma of fame using two of the biggest rock bands as metaphors - would you rather have everything you do be legendary but only last a short time or would you rather have some hits and misses but still a certain level a fame but for a far longer time. Personally, I’d rather be The Beatles - create music that defines then challenges then changes every rule. Then disband and let it be.
Jeff Beck - A Day In The Life
Here is what you should do if you are an artist who is thinking about covering a Beatles song:
- Look in the mirror and see if you’re Jeff Beck. If yes, skip to #3.
- Stop it and please go fuck yourself.
- Carry on.
Because Jeff Beck is the greatest living guitarist.
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence
Covering The Beatles like a champ.
Sidenote: this was on the US ‘84 release but not the U.K. release…
The Beatles - Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
The Beatles perform “Don’t Let Me Down.”
One of those second-level Beatles songs that shows what a brilliant jam band they are.
